Taekwondo Value
Taekwondo (TKD) is more than just a physical martial art; it is also a discipline that instills important values in its practitioners. These values are central to the philosophy of Taekwondo and guide the behavior and mindset of those who practice it.
TEN Core values of Taekwondo
Courtesy (Ye Ui)
- Practitioners are taught to be polite and respectful to everyone, both inside and outside the dojang (training hall). Courtesy involves showing respect to instructors, fellow students, and even opponents.
2. Integrity (Yom Chi)
- Integrity means being honest and having strong moral principles. In Taekwondo, this involves being true to oneself and others, adhering to ethical standards, and taking responsibility for one’s actions.
3. Perseverance (In Nae)
- Perseverance is the ability to persist in the face of challenges. In Taekwondo, students learn to keep pushing forward, even when the training gets tough or when progress seems slow.
4. Self-Control (Geuk Gi)
- Self-control is about managing one’s emotions, particularly in stressful or confrontational situations. It’s essential in both practice and in applying Taekwondo principles in everyday life.
5. Indomitable Spirit (Baekjul Boolgool)
- An indomitable spirit is the unwavering determination to overcome any obstacle. It reflects a never-give-up attitude, where practitioners remain steadfast even in the most difficult circumstances.
6. Respect (Gyeongnye)
- Respect is foundational in Taekwondo. It includes respect for oneself, for others, for the rules, and for the art of Taekwondo itself. This value is reflected in the bowing rituals and the respectful conduct expected of all students.
7. Loyalty (Chung)
- Loyalty involves being faithful to one’s instructors, school, and fellow students. It also extends to a commitment to the values of Taekwondo and a dedication to continual self-improvement.
8. Humility (Kyumson)

9. Courage (Yong Gi)
- Courage is the ability to face fear and take action in difficult situations. In Taekwondo, this includes standing up for what is right, defending others, and having the bravery to challenge oneself.
